10 Best Places to Go in Winter in Germany

While not all of Germany is great to visit in winter, there are some regions that turn into a winter wonderland and therefore, should be on your bucket list!

Monreal

Monreal in the Eifel is one of the most beautiful towns in Germany. Many TV shows and movies have been filmed here as it makes for the perfect location. Monreal is full of gorgeous timbered houses, narrow alleys and cute cafes. In winter, it will most likely be frosty or snowy with lots of beautiful Christmas decorations.

Monschau

Monschau is another beautiful small town in the Eifel. It is located right at the Belgium border and in the Eifel National Park. The entire area is just stunning as there are lots of gorgeous forest views. Monschau becomes very colourful in winter when the whole town is decorated for Christmas. There are quite a few local shops, restaurants and cafes which makes it perfect for a full-day visit.

Traben-Trabach

Traben-Trabach in the Moselle Valley will most likely not have snow when you visit, BUT we had to add it to the list as Traben-Trabach has one of the most unique Christmas markets in Germany. The entire Christmas market takes place underground in multiple old wine cellars. You should definitely go here and experience it for yourself. It’s magical!

Freiburg

Freiburg is always a great visit and highly likely to get snow in winter, as it is situated in the Black Forest. The Black Forest is the perfect winter getaway as the dense, snow-covered forests make for the most beautiful scenery. Freiburg has a gorgeous old town, a beautiful Christmas market and a breathtaking city forest that you can easily access from the old town on foot. From the forest, you have an amazing view over the city and the Black Forest itself.

Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (Black Forest High Road)

The Schwarzwaldhochstrasse is home to the highest points in the Black Forest which almost guarantees snowfall! You will find amazing hikes up here as well as skiing opportunities and a couple of great restaurants to just relax and take in the amazing views.

Bastei Bridge

If you haven’t seen the Bastei Bridge in the Erzgebirge in winter, you need to add it to your list now! Nothing compares to seeing the gigantic pillars covered in snow. Additionally, there won’t be many people around as most tourists visit this region in the summer. There are also ample hiking opportunities for you to go explore this unique winter wonderland among some of the tallest natural rock formations in Germany.

Dresden

Dresden is one of Germany’s most beautiful cities with its majestic buildings. You do not want to miss the Christmas markets here, as they turn this gorgeous city into a magical place. It doesn’t necessarily snow here, but this city glimmers with gorgeous Christmas decorations regardless.

Nuremberg

If you are looking for the best winter treats from Germany, Nuremberg is the place to go! Gingerbread from Nuremberg is famous all over the world and absolutely delicious. While coming here to enjoy some of the best Christmas treats you’ll ever have, you should check out the gorgeous city and castle as well. 

Königssee

Snow guaranteed! The Königssee is one of Germany’s most beautiful lakes surrounded by very tall mountains. It is very likely there will be snow here during your visit in winter. Make sure to take the boat across the lake to really take in how beautiful the entire lake is.

Garmisch-Patenkirchen

Another place where snow is almost a guarantee! Garmisch-Patenkirchen is located in the German Alps and is surrounded by the most stunning nature. Nearby, you will find a lot of amazing places to visit such as the Eibsee Lake or the Zugspitze. Don’t miss out on visiting here in winter!
